Little Bit of Our History….

We have been very busy for the past few years starting our Antique Business and tending it to watch it change and grow.

The progress has been a roller coaster ride. Starting back for my partner Venanzio (Vince) Jelenic many moons ago. Sometimes you can hear him say 20 years, 25 years of experience in the restoration of fine old antiques, but if you listen closely, I would whisper 30 years have passed.

Vince & I started our Antique Business in 2003, Known as Twojjs Antiques specializing in Miniatures Salesman Samples, Restoration of Antique Furniture & Likeables. The first couple of years we were very busy moving from show to show & Weekend Markets. The way I remember it, it was always such a splash with our display of Miniatures, people just hovered to see these adorable small size pieces of furniture. We love them & still do.

In the first couple of years we had been searching of a permanent place for our business, somewhere that met all of our important criteria, which was simple, “a place to live, a place to work, and a place to play”. Not as easy as it sounds.

Green Spot was born at 175 Beverly Street # 15 Cambridge Ontario, we had locked ourselves into a large rental unit at the back of a plaza on the corner of Beverly & Dundas for a 3 year term.

The store was huge, started with 5000 square feet. At the time I was thinking what are we going to do with all this space, well in no time we had filled it to the rafters. Literally we were using the ceiling to hang things from to use all of the space we had. I use to tell my customers that we rented the ceiling space too, we might as well use it.

Two Years into our leased contract we had expanded to include the unit #14 beside us adding another 2000 square feet to our business. This allowed us to start to look at consignments as part of our business. Again in no time that space was filling in quickly. If you were interested in antiques and vintage items, we were the place to go. I had customers spend 2 or 3 hours and still wanted to spend more time looking at all the cool stuff.

We looked at some very interesting places that would or could work, for example we looked at an OLD School house, Royal Hotel Cambridge, The Knife Factory

Cambridge, to name a few. We ended up with an OLD Dairy, the former Cedar Hill Dairy Galt (Cambridge) is where you will find us, living, working & playing (I mean restoring). It is a great OLD building, with tons of local history. The building became an antique before we purchased, it celebrated 100 years in 2004.

We are now actively searching for memorabilia of the dairy,

to date we have located two Cedar Hill Dairy bottles, a great old cardboard sign advertising Krim- Ko chocolate drink, small window sign, couple of cardboard milk caps & pencil found in the walls we had taken down, and 220 Cedar Hill Milk tokens. Also collected a Photo of the Galt Milk Maids Donated by Elizabeth (Betty) Poll.

Just recently Mrs Marion Westlake (executive secretary to Mr. Rosebrugh) donated an original copy of Mr. Howard Rosebrugh Appointment of position of Director of Dealer Relations (Chrysler Corporation of Canada, Limited) Dated August 1, 1959. Mr. & Mrs Rosebrugh owned Cedar Hill.

We would like to send a big Thank You to Roman & Nevia for all of their support and help over the past few years, they are always ready to give a helping hand many times over. Roman & Nevia are a great couple. Vince & I owe them large.

Occasionally you will get a glimpse of them at the shop again helping out to keep Green Spot’s doors open when we are out of town. They both will be in the shop for the weekend on July 24 – 26 2009. Nev & Roman both like to come to shows to help there too, whether it’s tending to customers or tearing down after the show is done, we have grown accustomed to having them around. ON The Road Kempenfest Festival 2009

Our ONE & Only Show a Year.

This year we are planning to double up our stock.

Two Vans & a trailer for the trek up to Barrie.

Long Weekend August Civic Holiday, 3 day Show, 1/4 million people, Live Entertainment, Ribs, Beer Tent and a beautiful view, the backdrop, Kempenfelt Bay

Friday we arrived, checked into our Motel Room, Home for the weekend. Time for our initial set-up to keep us out of harm’s way of the sunrays & rain drops.

We are ready to call it a day, Canopies Up, Couple of display table out & One Van Emptied Been a long day with a slow drive up to Barrie, Check In, Tents Up, Now it time to round up some food, then back to our home away from home. Early morning wake up call in for 6am Saturday morning. Saturday is a super busy day, first up, Timmy’s for our large coffees to go, the biggest part of our set up, then we are ready to tend with the fast approaching customers. The work of All set up done by 9am. Ready to Rock & Roll.

Customers, tourist, Local Barrie Residences are all out for the day. Kempenfest is filled with Tons of things to see, live entertainment, Beer Tents & Food

Saturday was a beautiful day, nothing but sunshine, filled with people, and the sales were great too.

Kempenfest 2009 proved to be another success, first one in 6 years where the weather co-operated with us for the entire 3 day weekend. Can’t get better than that.
